Extend Your Visa

If You Study at HSE

Step 1. Prepare all documents to extend your visa in advance

You can extend the period of your lawful stay in Russia for up to 1 year by extending your Russian visa.

You can extend a single-entry visa and a multiple-entry visa.

To extend your visa, please prepare all relevant documents and submit them in person to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre not earlier than 90 calendar days and no later than 45 calendar days prior to the expiry date of your visa.

Please prepare the following documents:

  • a copy of your passport (all pages);
  • a copy of your visa;
  • a copy of your registration (both sides);
  • a copy of your migration card;
  • a colour photograph (3.5 х 4.5 cm);
  • a confirmation of the state duty payment (1600 roubles; you can get a pay slip from our office in Room 538, 20 Myasnitskaya Ulitsa);
  • an original certificate (‘spravka’) issued by your programme office (only in Russian, printed on a HSE letterhead, its date of issue may not be earlier than 2 months from the date of the submission of your documents);

  • a copy of your referral letter, issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and certified by your programme office (if you are a quota student);
  • an extract from your admission directive or a copy of your admission directive provided by your programme office (if you have been admitted under a general competition);
  • a copy of your agreement certified by your programme office (if you are studying on a fee-paying basis).
Pursuant to Russian legislation, foreign citizens who violate immigration regulations are subject to a fine of up to RUB 7,000 (seven thousand roubles) and may be deported from Russia on the basis of a court decision, with a further ban on entry into the Russian Federation for up to 3 years.

Step 2. Submit your documents

To extend your visa, please prepare all required documents and submit them in person to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre not earlier than 90 calendar days and not later than 45 calendar days prior to the expiry date of your visa.

Your registration will be extended after you receive a new visa. The new registration will be valid until the expiry of the new visa. But please kindly note, every time, you leave and enter Russia using your valid visa, new registration must be done at your place of residence. Your multiple-entry visa will be ready within 45 calendar days upon the submission of your documents to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre.

You will be informed by e-mail or your contact phone number as soon as your visa is ready.

Make sure that you keep the originals of your migration card and registration when submitting your documents for visa extension to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre.

Please note: The local office of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs will only accept visa extension applications at least 45 сalendar days prior to their expiry day. 

Step 3. Bring your passport to have a multiple-entry visa affixed

As soon as you are informed that your visa is ready, please present your original passport to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre at 20 Myasnitskaya Ulitsa (Room 538). We will keep it for 1-2 working days to get your visa.

Please note that the extension of your visa can take 45 calendar days.

Step 4. Receive your passport with a multiple-entry visa 

You may collect your passport with a multiple-entry visa within 1-2 working days after it was submitted to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre.

We kindly ask that you refrain from buying air and railway tickets in advance. Please check the expiry dates of your documents before booking tickets to arrive in or leave Russia.

You cannot arrive earlier or stay in Russia longer than the dates specified in your visa.

Step 5. Extend your registration after receiving your new visa

After receiving a new visa, you must extend your registration at your place of residence. If you live in a dormitory, please contact its passport officer. If you rent an apartment, please ask the landlord to extend your registration at the relevant local territorial office.To get futher information, please visit this page.

 

If You Work at HSE

Step 1. Prepare all documents to extend your visa in advance

You can extend the period of your lawful stay in Russia for a longer term by extending your visa.

To extend your visa, please prepare all required documents and submit them to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre, via the coordinator or manager of your department no less than 25 working days prior to the expiry date of your visa.

Please prepare the following documents:

  • your passport: original + a copy (all pages);
  • a copy of your visa;
  • your registration: original + copy (both sides);
  • your migration card: original + copy,
  • a colour photograph (3.5 х 4.5 cm);
  • a confirmation of a state duty payment  (1,600 roubles, please contact us by e-mail at visa-registration@hse.ru;
  • a copy of your employment/independent contractor agreement, certified by the HSE Office of Human Resources;
  • a new original work permit + copy (for HQS employees).

If you arrive with your family, please also submit their documents to extend their visa. To this end, you must submit:

  • original passports + copies of passports of each family member and a copy of your passport (pages with photographs and validity periods);
  • a copy of your visa, and visa copies of your family members;
  • copies of your family member’s registrations along with a copy of your registration (both sides);
  • an original migration card of each family member + 1 copy;
  • a colour photograph of each family member (3.5 х 4.5 cm);
  • a confirmation of the state duty payment (1,600 roubles, please contact us by e-mail at visa-registration@hse.ru to get a pay slip);
  • a copy of your employment/independent contractor agreement, certified by the HSE Office of Human Resources;
  • a copy of your work permit (for HQS employees);
  • a copy of your marriage certificate or birth certificates of your children.

You must extend your registration at your place of residence after you receive the new visa (please contact the passport officer if you live in the HSE Guesthouse, or ask your landlord to register you at the relevant territorial local office, if you rent an apartment).

We only need the originals of your passport, migration card, registration and work permit on the day when we submit your documents to the local office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Afterwards, you can collect these documents and keep them with you until your multiple-entry visa is ready.

Your multiple-entry visa will be ready within 14 working days upon submission of your documents to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre.

You will be informed via e-mail or your contact phone number as soon as your visa is ready.

The local office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs accepts applications for visa extension at least 25 calendar days before their date of expiry. 

Step 3. Bring your passport to have your multiple-entry affixed

As soon as you are informed that your visa is ready, please present your original passport to the HSE Visa and Registration Centre at 20 Myasnitskaya Ulitsa (Room 538). We will keep it for 1-2 working days to get your visa.
